Roulette Myths and Tall Stories. Get the Facts on Playing Roulette

Roulette, more than any other game, has its myths and legends. Here we run through the 3 biggest clangers. Make sure that you understand these, and you are on your way to playing smarter.

Myth 1: All Roulette Wheels Are Identical.

Fact or Fiction? - Fiction! For a start there are different types of roullete wheels out there, such as an American Roulette wheel and a European roulette wheel. An American roulette wheel has two zero pockets, a European one zero pocket. So that fact on its own blows this myth. Also, at a land based casino, it is impossible to manufacture 2 wheels that are identically the same. There will always be a tiny difference or sligh imperfection in the wheel.

Myth 2: if the ball lands on black 3 times in a row, it is more likely to land on red on the 4th spin.

Fact or Fiction? Sorry to say that this is fiction. The wheel has no memory. Each and every spin is a unique event (mutually exclusive).

Myth 3: Spend long enough playing, and you will be able to devise a mathematical system that will enable you to consistently beat the wheel.

Fact or fiction. Again, sorry to say that this is fiction. Roulette is a game of chance. The odds you get are set by the mechanical make up of the wheel and the payout that the casinos set. The payout is generally set at level that gives the house an edge over the long term. For example, on even money bets such as red/black, the casino pays 1:1 but the odds of you winning are actually lower than 50/50, as the roulette wheel has a zero pocket. The only real way that a casino has been beaten by a system, is by clever types measuring the imperfections on a physical wheel at a casino and using this information on the wheel bias to their advantage.
